Let's play some more exercises over the Ionian Pattern Position. Be sure that your right hand (picking hand) is doing the right things as per lesson #1 and lesson #2. You will have to repeat all these exercises with the other modes. Do not forget to practice with a metronome, or even better, a drum machine. Start at a tempo of about 60, before you venture to try to play faster.
Also, it is very important that you play with the same intensity you would play on stage, meaning that you will have to put some pressure on the strings- not too much. It's not necessary to get blisters, but play at a volume that will give you the opportunity to play louder, or softer if necessary. This is very important in order to create dynamics. What we call "the groove" is not something mystical, it's just the fusion of good timing and good dynamics.
